Nikon D3s - High-Speed Pro Digital SLR
The Nikon D3s is designed for fast-paced action like that encountered by professional news and sports photographers. A close sibling to the Nikon top-of-the-range D3X, the D3s is usually priced at a significant premium to the D3 but deep discount (around 35%) to the D3X.
The D3s dSLR camera has superior continuous shooting capability. It can capture up to nine frames per second (bursting rate 9 fps), allowing it to snap-freeze time with exacting clarity and precision. To support its continuous capture, the camera has an expanded buffer. It allows up to 36 14-bit NEF (RAW) or 82 JPEG (fine) images. The expanded buffer means it now takes longer before the 9 fps bursting rate begins to slow.
The Nikon D3s comes with a HD-Movie making capability similar to that of the D5000 entry level or the higher-end D300S DX format cameras. This facility provides 24 fps, an internal microphone plus a 3.5mm jack to attach a microphone externally. It also allows a video to be snap-frozen into a still image in jpeg format with a resolution of 720x540 pixels. A basic in-camera editing capability is also provided.
The camera, with a base ISO sensitivity from ISO 200 to 12,800 makes it possible to capture previously impossible images - image opportunities which were often ignored because of low light levels. Now, in even more demanding lighting conditions, photographers can select expanded sensitivity settings of ISO equivalent 25,600, ISO equivalent 51,200 and an incredible ISO equivalent sensitivity of 102,400 which reveals detail in extreme low-light environments that challenge even the human eye’s ability to discern subject content. In addition, a setting of ISO equivalent 100 is provided.
Another cool feature of the D3s dSLR camera is its one button live view with two shooting modes. These two modes are suitable for either studio or remote shooting. Its tripod mode provides up to 27x magnification with precise focus confirmation when set-up in the tripod mode, allowing great shots of even the tiniest of tiny subjects.
In conclusion, the Nikon D3s comes with a range of other improvements versus the now-retired D3 including a soft-touch AF-On button; a new, dedicated live view button and a slightly lighter (about 60 grams) weight. But most users will focus on its greater depth of field, fast shutter speeds and amazing low light performance. It combines well with the new Nikkor 70-200mm VR II lens.
