The Canon EF 50mm F1.4 USM: The Most Effective Bang For Your Buck
The Canon ef 50mm 1.4 lens gives justice to the saying "great things come in smalle packages". This lens has everything the recreational and pro photographer will desire in a prime lens, and more. Despite its petite size, which is in reality a plus for users, it is jam-packed with power, function, durability and versatility.
One of the pros of having the 50mm 1.4 lens of canon is that is very easy to pack and carry, as it only weighs 10.2 ounces and is only as big as the average fist. It is very durable and won't be rocked by the usual usage.
The canon 50mm f1 4 is one of the fastest prime lenses in the market, with only the f1.2 version taking first place. It can produce very sharp images and it can be used even in low light situations. The 50mm would be better for portraits.
The 35mm would be better for pretty much everything else.
With the 50mm lenses, note that you'll want the 50mm f/1.4 AF-S version. It's expensive, but the cheaper 50mm f/1.4 AF-D and the 50mm f/1.8 won't auto focus on your D40.
The 35mm will focus just fine on a D40 - no problem.
