Hi All,
I am planning to buy a telephoto. I am confused between canon 55-250 IS and sigma 70-300 APO DG. I have a canon 1000D. The canon has IS. Does it have an impact when shooting in low light. 70-300 seems to give more range (300x1.6) taking into account the cropping factor but is this gain just like cropping out a shot in LR or gimp.
Will both work for fireworks or should I consider a L series lens for taking fireworks? (fireworks happening at a distance). I have the kit 18-55mm now.

First off, ignore the crop factor when you're considering two lenses to be used on the same camera. When using two different lenses on the same camera, both focal lenghts will be multiplied with the same factor, and thus the ratio between them is not changed at all. Crop factors are only of importance when you compare lenses on cameras with different sensor or film sizes.
Yes, IS helps in less-than-bright-daylight situations by enabling you to shoot at slower shutter speeds), albeit not so much for fireworks (for which you'll need a tripod, and on a tripod IS should be deactivated). Note that serious low light use of a telephoto lens will demand a tripod no matter what; don't expect wonders from IS. With IS you can use one handheld in fading light, but not at night.
There is a stabilized version of the Sigma lens (called OS instead of IS), but overall i'd prefer the Canon lens to both of them. Compared to the unstabilized Sigma, it is no contest at all - get the Canon.
Anyway, the difference between 250mm and 300mm on the long end is negligible, in my opinion. On the other hand, the difference between 55mm and 70mm on the wide end is significant - the Canon lens is much more versatile than the Sigma one.
