Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Review
Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Telephoto Zoom Lens
However, I learned taking photos at the Patriots vs Rams pre-season game that i will be able to never get "pro" quality photos at nighttime, not even at skilled soccer games where the lighting is extremely sensible to confirm tv viewers get sensible visibility. Even with ISO at 1600 i used to be able to manage a shutter speed of solely four hundred at f5.6, not enough to induce crisp shots of moving players. Shots taken when there was a bog down or pause within the action were excellent, even at the higher than mentioned settings, however when the players were moving rapidly, the shots were to a small degree soft. Post processing created them terribly satisfactory for private enjoyment, however not for a lot of a lot of bold use.
Earlier i'd have given the lens a four, perhaps even a three, attributable to my game expertise, however since the sport I actually have learned plenty concerning lenses and that i currently recognize that the comparatively low-light photos I got were the simplest I might expect from this f4.0-5.6 lens. If I were progressing to shoot plenty of night sports, i'd be saving for a two.8 zoom lens, however they're terribly, terribly expensive for an honest one. An f2.8 lens could be a abundant faster lens than a 4-5.6 In day time settings, I actually have consistently gotten clear, sharp shots however haven't nevertheless tried shooting kiteboarders, one thing I fancy doing. However, my expectation is that {i will|i will be able to|i'll} get sensible shots as a result of i will be shooting throughout the day and able to shoot at 800 at a minimum, a lot of seemingly one thousand.
I have been practicing taking sports photos by photographing the batters in action for many native groups. 2 of those games were within the late afternoon and that i was shooting at five pm or later in October, that means that lightweight was changing into low. For these shots I place the camera in Tv mode and set the shutter speed at one thousand. ISO was on auto and therefore the camera was allowed to pick out the simplest ISO up to a most of 1600. At now of day, even within the autumn lightweight, I got terribly crisp shots. several needed some processing to boost exposure, however the results were terribly satisfactory as a result of the topics were sharp. folks to whom I actually have shown the photos said they were "great".
In summary, for what I do most of the time, this lens is superb. and that i extremely appreciate the image stabilizer. i can not imagine shopping for a lens while not it since ninety eight of the shooting I do is handheld.

Answer:
I own the 55-250mm IS lens and have been very happy with it, and have recommended it to many.
It is very light weight and easier to carry around than heavier, more expensive lenses. For my needs, the image quality and lens sharpness if fine. I use it with the Canon XSi/450D. I've written my practical evaluation of the lens in my blog:

Many Canon DSLRs have a focal length multiplier of 1.6. If yours does, the 55-250mm lens has an effective focal range of 88-400mm.
Here are some sample photos taken with the lens in my pbase galleries:

If the 55-250mm IS meets your needs, get it.
