Canon HG20 Feature Review
The Canon HG20 sets the standard for high definition. The Canon HG20 is now the topmost-rated high definition camcorder on the marketplace. It's 60 GB hard drive offers the advantage of storing 5 and a half hours of top quality video, which can be supplemented by adding SDHC memory cards. The Vixia HG20 is also one of the least expensive hard drive camcorders out in the marketplace.
This Canon HD camcorder delivers optimal picture quality, extended shooting times along with tremendous ease and versatility when viewing video on television or a PC. You can capture amazing HD video with greater detail and color reproduction with its innovative 24 Mbps ability. In addition, like the Canon Vixia camcorders, the HG20 features a Canon HD video lens, full HD CMOS sensor and the Canon's sole DIGIC DV II picture processor.
The easiest experiences with the Canon HG20 is the buton marked "Easy" in the LCD cavity. The Easy mode simplifies all by locking out all menus and manual controls. The only thing you are allowed to do in this mode is point, zoom and record. For those that are interested in a little more controls, outside of the easy mode, the interface has a bit of a learning curve.
Also included is a new look to the menu, but it has little impact on operations. Canon packs in the manual controls. You'll find exposure, focus, white balance, and Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, zoom sensitivity controls, and mic level controls, as well as many one-touch correction tools. Overall, its a powerful package.
However, it is not perfect. The joystick is the only method of control, and while it's well placed and a descent size, the controls are not as smooth as one would like.
Canon does offer a big plus in manual controls over the competition. While the actual level of control is limited, the image effects menu offers you the power to adjust saturation, sharpness, and contrast.
The zoom on the Canon HG20 is located on top of the camcorder, near the back of the camcorder. It's a simple, familiar rocking toggle switch common on most camcorders. The most essential thing to note is that the zoom motor is loud for a modern camcorder. The zooming, on a small scale appears in the upper left corner of the display to supply you a sense of where you are in the zoom angle. Regrettably, the actual zoom value is not expressed in numbers, which could help if you're attempting to replicate setttings for a certain shot.
