Frequently Asked Questions...
Buying the right UV filter for Canon T1i EF-S 18-55mm IS lens?
I was looking up ways to protect my DSLR from moisture and sand at the beach, and I found that it would be useful to have a filter on the lens. I honestly know very little about camera lenses, what makes certain lenses so special and expensive, etc. So I'm not sure what kind of filter I should buy. I think a UV filter would be useful, but I'm not sure what all these numbers mean (55mm filter??).
Any recommendations? I'm also not looking to spend too much.

If that is your lens, then you can see on the left side that it needs a 58mm filter.
In that case, this is the filter i would get:

It doesn't filter UV, but that's not necessary for a digital SLR, as the deep pass filter in front of the sensor already does that - that was only an issue for film SLRs. This one just protects the lens.
By the way, even with a filter sand is your camera's worst enemy right after water. A single grain of sand can, if you're unlucky, destroy your lens if it gets inside it, e,g. when you're zooming and the lens changes its length.
