As I mentioned while answering the other post of this question, the 15-85mm is sharper than the 17-40mm...This much I know for sure. You asked if IS made a difference between the 17-40 f/4L versus the 24-105mm f/4L...The answer is "yes and no." I tend to follow the "reciprocal rule" with respect to shutter speeds so the IS feature of the 24-105m didn't make a huge difference to me unless I was shooting in low-light with a relatively low ISO that didn't allow me to follow that rule. Slower shutter speeds makes IS a handy feature but, it's not a necessity.
