Sigma 10-20 Review
One of the most used interchangeable lens products on the market today is the 10-20mm lens made by Sigma. This Japanese lens product is a fan favorite due to not only its look and feel but also its price relative to some of its competitors in the interchangeable lens market. Sigma lenses can be used not only on Sigma models but also other brands such as Nikon and Canon among others. These lenses come in Wide Angle and Telephoto versions and can be utilized in multiple settings by all expertise levels both amateur and professional. This review will focus on the Wide Angle 10-20 mm F4-5.6 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon mount but its safe to say those looking for reviews on other similar Sigma models of note would benefit from reading this Sigma 10-20 Review.
Sigma 10-20mm Lens Feel and Appearance
On first look at the Sigma 10-20, this lens undoubtedly passes the professional standards in terms of appearance and style. The standard black rubberized color scheme along with the white numbers and letters should fit any style of camera this lens will be used in conjunctionwith. The solid gold ring adds a classy touch to an already clean look, although purists may not necessarily like this addition. It comes with a 2 lens caps (rear and front), a lens hood (nice free addition) and a zippered carrying case that is evenly padded unlike other competitor models. At a rough weight of 16 oz, most users should be able to hold it for any length of shooting time however those with neck or shoulder issues need to be careful during longer shoots. The lens is easy to connect and the manual focus and zoom operation is smooth but not too much to lose the action and feel of the lens. The motion is quiet and fast in the manual mode without even turning the camera power on. Overall feel and appearance receives a full 5 out of 5 stars.
Sigma 10-20mm Lens Performance
Once the camera is powered on, you get a much better feel of the Sigma 10-20mm quality. The lens autofocus is very smooth and amazingly quiet for a wide angle model, very important features in the professional photography realm to avoid distraction. In addition, the HSM autofocus is lightning fast even in dim light conditions and the focusing very precise. One nice feature is the existence of an internally focusing lens which means the act of focusing does not turn the manual focus ring. One thing that should be mentioned is the zoom and focus turns are the opposite of the Canon lenses so those who are usual Canon lens users will have to adjust to this minor feature. Again, the lens performance gets a 5 out of 5 stars.
Sigma 10-20mm Picture Sharpness
The Sharpness of the pictures taken with the Sigma 10-20 is very good and well above standards. When editing or magnifying the pictures, this model may not produce pictures quite as sharp as some of the extreme high end lenses from Nikon. Some of the photos could have been a tad more defined in terms of the facial features but considering the vast price difference between this Sigma 10-20 lens and some of the Nikon models, sometimes as much as 50% of the cost, we would recommend going with the Sigma. Sharpness receives a 4.5 out of 5 stars due to the noted sharpness decline at the wide edges of the picture.
Picture Color and Saturation
Since the Sigma 10-20 has a 2 mm wider focal length than any of the Nikon model, the mentality many of us make in terms of cropping post-shoot can be thrown out the window. The color on all of the pics taken is vibrant and very rich without being extreme. The contrast is also good for all picture settings and backdrops, with outdoor shots being especially breathtaking. We have read other reviews mentioning cloud and mountain photographs being especially nice with this lens and we could only imagine this would be the case with its great contrast feature. Maybe the best part of this camera is that with this wide-angle lens, you see pictures that you truly didn’t even know were there. Quite an exciting experience for all photo junkies. Color and saturation get a solid 5 out of 5 stars.
We hope you get some quality nuggets out of our Sigma 10-20 review and are able to make the best decision for your camera usage. This lens can be found for as little as $480, almost half as much as comparable Nikon models, so we would give the go ahead on a solid purchase value.
